Wolfe Insurance Services Politicians Versus Elected Representatives?byJ. Dennis Wolfe Last Updated May 17, 1998 "someone who seeks office for personal or partisan gain often by dishonest or cunning means." What does this mean? As near as I can interpret this dictionary definition anyone who says they are a politician is telling you that they are dishonest. I am reminded once of the time Willie Brown was on Ronn Owens' KGO Morning Talk Show. He was Speaker of the House at the time and he was talking against term limits. I called in when he referred to himself as an honest politician. I shared with the Speaker this dictionary definition and asked him if he wasn't instead an elected representative. I hung up and listened. For the next forty-five minutes Mr. Brown referred to himself as an honest elected representative. That convinced me to believe he was a more dishonest person - true or not - it didn't matter. The truth is that we are supposed to be electing people to represent us not serve themselves. The question you need to be asking yourself is how do I know the difference? Well, sit back and I will share the acid test with you. The Acid Test You need to know if the individual who is seeking your vote is a Politician or is an Elected Representative. This is the Acid Test. A Politician will tell you what they feel you want to hear. No matter what the issue is that you ask them to explain, they will always answer with a long-winded explanation. It will leave you more confused than before you asked the question. When they start their answer with these two words.....I Think...well... Watch Out! Run for the hills! We do not elect them to think for us. We need to think and communicate our thoughts to Elected Representatives. A true Elected Representative will listen to what his or her constituents want and communicate them to the legislative body where they serve. They build no campaign war chest for future elections. A true Elected Representative will send all the money he or she receives from Lobbyists and Political Action Committees back to the community and see that is spread around their district. If you do your job and effectively represent your constituency, you will not need a big war chest to fund a re-election campaign. This is The Politician Acid Test! Our Nation's Greatest Legal Documents Folks, we have lost sight of what made America great! George Washington turned down the opportunity to become King. He recognized what he had to do and that was to ensure that there would be future Presidents to follow him. He was an Elected Representative! It seems that very few people read our U.S. Constitution or The Declaration of Independence. No where in either document can I find the word "Politician." Politicians are what brought Rome down. They argued amongst themselves and as a divided group of people, they were easily defeated. On the other hand these two great documents do discuss the people who serve us as elected to represent us. That makes them Elected Representatives.
